Senior Software Engineer

About the role

Bake AI works across AI research, evaluation, agents, and infrastructure. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to build the software that connects these capabilities to practical products and workflows.

This role is available full-time or part-time, based in San Mateo, California, or remotely.

You will own substantial features and systems from design through production: APIs, backend services, data models, and the interfaces used to configure work and understand results. You will work closely with research and engineering teams to turn evolving requirements into software that is clear to use, reliable to operate, and straightforward to extend.

This role calls for at least five years of professional software engineering experience and the judgment to take an ambiguous problem through architecture, implementation, and delivery. You should be comfortable making technical decisions, staying close to the code, and improving the quality of the work around you.

What you’ll do

  • Design and build services, APIs, and web interfaces for research, evaluation, and agent workflows, including launching jobs, managing configurations and datasets, and inspecting results.
  • Own projects from requirements and technical design through implementation, testing, rollout, and subsequent improvements. Make trade-offs explicit and keep the scope focused on useful outcomes.
  • Build dependable background processing for long-running work, with clear job states, cancellation, retries, recovery, and diagnostics that make failures understandable.
  • Develop data models and application interfaces that keep runs, artifacts, and results organized and traceable as workflows evolve.
  • Turn research prototypes into maintainable software with clear boundaries, documented interfaces, reproducible behavior, and appropriate access controls.
  • Improve application reliability and performance through testing, profiling, observability, and investigation of production issues.
  • Raise engineering quality through thoughtful design and code reviews, practical documentation, and mentoring. Work with technical peers to choose abstractions that remain useful as requirements change.

What you’ll bring

  • At least five years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial responsibility for software used in production.
  • Evidence of independently designing, shipping, and maintaining a meaningful product or system. You can explain its architecture, the trade-offs you made, and the results you personally delivered.
  • Strong programming skills in a language such as Python, TypeScript, or Go, and the ability to navigate and improve an unfamiliar codebase.
  • Strong backend fundamentals: API design, relational data modeling, asynchronous processing, and failure handling. You understand how concurrency, retries, and partial failures affect correctness.
  • The ability to work across backend services and web interfaces, with deeper expertise in at least one area. You care about how a system behaves for the person using it.
  • Sound judgment about testing, maintainability, performance, and operational complexity. You can distinguish a useful first version from a shortcut that will undermine reliability.
  • Clear technical writing and productive collaboration with researchers and engineers. You can turn an open-ended problem into a plan, review others’ work carefully, and deliver with limited oversight.

Preferred experience

  • Building developer tools, data platforms, experiment management software, or other products for technical users.
  • Working on agent applications, evaluation workflows, or systems that integrate model and tool execution.
  • Designing workflow engines, job queues, or services that coordinate long-running tasks.
  • Taking a research prototype or early product through sustained production use.
  • Improving the engineering practices of a team through reusable tooling, testing, or technical mentorship.

How to apply

Email careers@bakelab.ai with your resume and a brief description of a product or system you owned. Explain the problem, your key design decisions, your contribution, and the outcome. Links to relevant code, products, or technical writing are welcome.
